Gender Justice & Joy Initiative
Gone are the days when abortion rights, access, and care were solely considered a "women's issue."
The Mahogany Project, in partnership with our reproductive and gender justice partners, is shifting the narrative around reproductive justice and abortion care to directly include transgender, gender diverse, and queer communities, as well as to highlight how Black and Brown people are deeply impacted and often overlooked in discussions of reproductive justice.
By combining our reproductive programming with the Gender Justice and Joy Initiative, our goal is to provide a whole-person approach that centers the care of those within our population.

Our Framework:
Enhance access to emergency contraception resources for Black transgender and queer individuals to remove barriers.
Increasing access to PrEP and DoxyPrEP for Black and Brown transgender and queer individuals in their respective locales.
Collaborate with community partners and members to develop educational trainings, workshops, and panels that emphasize the reproductive needs of Black and Brown transgender and queer individuals.
Provide local residents within our population with services and information for post-abortion care. Incorporating referrals to peer support groups, birth justice programs, and conferences.
Facilitating high-quality adult sexual education curricula. Facilitating a six-week program for community members that encompassed various subjects, including health, reproductive justice, and PrEP/Doxy PrEP education, culminating in a certification upon completion.
Disseminate mental health resources to anyone affected by the present reproductive climate in Texas, including information on local support groups, hotlines, and online resources that can provide immediate assistance and guidance.
Providing our community members with access to gender-affirming care resources, apparel, and hygiene products.

TWIST is an online research study at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health focused on the health, healthcare access, and lived experiences of transgender women and transfeminine people in the United States.
It has the goal of helping inform public health research, programs, and policies that can improve healthcare systems and health outcomes for transfeminine communities. The survey takes around thirty minutes to complete.

The Mahogany Project launched the Gender Justice & Joy Pop Up Tour in 2025 to provide free Plan B, condoms, lube, dental dams, makeup, and personal care items to communities across Texas.
These pop up events aim to resource and empower individuals by addressing gaps in reproductive and gender-affirming care caused by restrictive policies.
